What differentiates this day trip from so many others is the chance to not only learn about the wine making process, but also take part in it. During this fun and friendly workshop you travel out to a 1000 year old farmhouse in the picturesque Penedes region just outside Barcelona, which is now a family-run boutique winery. Here, you not only get to taste three different types of Cava (local sparkling white wine, made using the French Champagne method), but you also get to disgorge, bottle and label your very own bottle. This gives you a very hands on appreciation of the Cava making process!
Aside from the Cava tasting and disgorging, the activity also includes a tour of the winery’s farmhouse, cellars and vineyards. If you have a bit more time then I would recommend staying for their Catalan rustic lunch (€28 extra per person), cooked up by resident foodie Ramon. It includes the seasonal salad with xató sauce, tomato bread with cold cuts, cheeses and quince, sausages cooked with Cava, garlic and rosemary (grown in their garden) and desserts. Plus plenty more bubbly! The perfect way to round off your day in the Penedes.
Although you will have to make your own way from Barcelona to Laverns-Subirats station (very easy in fact), your hosts Eric & Ramon will meet you at the station and drive you the short distance to the winery. From there you’ll be in very safe hands as both are absolutely passionate about viticulture and good food, and are incredible hosts. Your Cava Producing Hosts
Eric and Ramon opened their boutique Cava winery back in 2004, renovating a 1000 year old farmhouse and reversing 50 years of neglect in the vineyards. Today they produce 15,000 bottles of artisan Cava each year, adding no chemicals or preservatives – just love! You won’t find a warmer welcome in Catalonia.

Availability: every morning at 10:30, and every Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 16:30. Open year round, except 25-26th Dec, and 1st Jan.
Duration: 3.5 hours (plus 2 hours for lunch, if this option is selected)
Group Size: maximum of 20 people.
Meeting Point: Laverns-Subirat Station in the Penedes wine region, 50 mins journey from Barcelona Sants main train station. More information given on booking.
My Tip: Arrive at Barcelona Sants train station at least 15 minutes early in order to buy your train tickets to Laverns-Subirat and find the right platform without having to rush.
MY VERDICT
A really fun day out in the picturesque Penedes region with great people. You end up learning a lot about Cava production and this is probably the best value wine tour on the market. If you can afford it, it’s well worth staying for Ramon’s slap-up lunch!

I did not stop smiling the whole day
Ramon and Eric were very personable guides who treated us like old friends rather than tourists. The cava we tasted was delicious (and plentiful), as was the home cooked traditional Catalan lunch we were served. It was really interesting to find out information about the different types of cavas produced and we found the day very informative. We corked, caged and cleaned our own bottle of cava each to take home with us as a lovely memento of the day.
Skip the tourist stuff and do this trip
Eric is a god of cava making and Ramon should have his own show on the Travel Channel. We spent the afternoon learning about the region, the intricacies of cava making and why this region is the only one in the world that can do it right. We had a Catalan meal (best duck I've ever had)... all in all, it was the best Friday ever.
